My husband's brother Penland E. Faught was killed on the USS Turner when it exploded in Jan 1944. If anyone knew him or of him please let us know. He was to go ashore and be married to a girl named Alice Keegan.

I served aboard in the after engine room from '65 thru '67. You know, a person seems to remember certain characters in their life, and I just noticed we lost one of those I served with. Nicky Woods, from Grassy Creek,NC, came aboard in '66 right out of boot camp. What an easy going, soft spoken southern gentleman he was for a eighteen year old kid. Our ship was much better for his service.

I served on the Turner from 5/67 to 5/68 in 1st division, left the Turner for the Brown Water Navy from 8/68 to 8/69. Snipes and deck apes didn't mingle much back then but it's good to know that some of us are still lookin' at the grass and not the roots-Don Lively BM2

I served aboard in 1960-1962 as an electrician EM3 working out of the machine shop. Great memories of the guys (snipes) berthed in the after sleeping quarters.

Hi Mr. Martinelli - I am the daughter of Donald Traviss who served as a radar man from 1960 - 1963. Would love to hear any stories you may remember. He died in 1973 when I was 3. Thank you for serving!
Sincerely, Nicole

My father, Larry( Louis) Eichen survived the sinking of the Turner off the coast of the Rockaways. He is in his 90's and can still remember the names of the friends he lost that night. We have lived in Rockaway since 1973,We could see the Ambrose tower before it was taken down. He refers to it as "THE spot" where his ship went down. My parents lost everything they owned in the flooding caused by Sandy almost 1 year ago. He lost all his Turner info, his cap and newspaper articles relating to the sinking and the windows being blown out on shore. He was active in the Jewish War Veterans for many years but his mobility and hearing are not good and he only participates in a yearly ceremony at our local Memorial Circle Park every Memorial Day.He's gone from marching in the local parade to riding in a car in the parade to using canes to get to the park ceremony so he can recite the Hebrew prayers. This year I went with him to assist him as he used his walker to get there. He said he goes to honor those who can't.
