We'll, it looks like I'll be attending the 2017 reunion in Providence! From all accounts, this may be the last reunion, unless people step up to the plate and expand the membership base. Looking forward to seeing all.
Respects, Huffines SM3 1960-1962

Sad to report, my dad, William J Zerhusen has answered the call of the Supreme Commander on Feb 25, 2017. He served as a Radio man on the Turner between July 1948 and April 1950.

I'm sorry this is late in coming but our father, Robert Traudt (DD 648) passed away at the age of 90. Pop was very proud of his service in the Navy, having quit high school shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack. He was assigned to the Turner shortly after commission as a sonar man & was with her from her shake down cruise till the time of her loss. I remember him telling us the day the Turner was lost he skipped breakfast when he heard SOS was going to be served. They were bound for the Brooklyn Navy Yard & he lived on a short distance away 5 or so blocks) & knew he would be getting liberty & breakfast at home. Skipping breakfast that day may very well have saved his life.
all the best & God bless you guys for your service to our country
Matt Traudt

I served on Turner from Feb. 13th 1947 to Sept. 12th 1953. Have many fond memories, two trips to china, Japan, Guam, and ports in Asia. moved to the east coast through the Panama Canal in 1949, home ported in Newport RI. Made many trips to the Med. Transferred to Yellowstone Sept. 1953. I was impressed mat the leaders when I first reported aboard, they all had seen enemy action in just ending WWII. A great generation of men. Capt. Anthrim was our CO, a Medal of Honor recipient. A crew of excellence they were indeed.

My Dad John W. Showers was a machinist mate sailor on the USS TURNER when it sunk in the NY Harbor. He said that he learned that the Army was setting off mines that day or they hit one of their own mines. He said he thinks that is what sunk the ship not a German sub.

My husband's brother Penland E. Faught was killed on the USS Turner when it exploded in Jan 1944. If anyone knew him or of him please let us know. He was to go ashore and be married to a girl named Alice Keegan.
